How can I tell whether an electrical problem needs immediate attention?
Burning smells, scorch marks, buzzing panels, warm faceplates, and repeated tripping all mean stop and call somebody immediately. Flickering on a single fixture can usually wait a day or two. Anything you can smell, hear, or feel by hand cannot wait at all.
Which edition of the National Electrical Code does Georgia enforce?

What is the difference between a fuse box and a breaker panel?
A fuse melts once and has to be replaced; a breaker trips and resets. Fuse boxes also invite the old trick of fitting an oversized fuse, which quietly removes the protection the circuit was built around. Capacity is usually the bigger limitation though.
Why do lights dim when a large appliance starts up?
Motors draw a heavy surge at startup, so a brief dip is normal. A deep dim that lingers, or one that happens across the whole house, usually points at an undersized service, a loose neutral, or too much load sharing one circuit.
Is it safe to rely on extension cords instead of adding outlets?
Extension cords are temporary tools. Left in place permanently, they get pinched under rugs and furniture, overheat under continuous load, and bypass the protection built into the branch circuit. Adding a properly wired receptacle costs less than the damage one failure causes.
How do I find out which breaker controls which circuit?
A circuit tracer identifies it in seconds without switching anything off. The older method of turning breakers off one at a time and walking the house works, but it costs an afternoon and irritates everybody living in the house.
How should I prepare for an electrician's visit?
Clear access to the panel and to any affected outlets, note when the problem started and what makes it worse, and pen the dog in. Photos or a short video of a symptom you cannot reproduce on demand help us enormously.
What is the difference between AFCI and GFCI protection?
GFCI protection watches for current leaking to ground and protects people from shock. AFCI protection detects the electrical signature of arcing inside damaged wiring and protects the building from fire. Current code requires both, in different rooms and for different reasons.

What causes a burning smell near a panel or outlet?

A dedicated circuit serves one appliance and nothing else. Code calls for them on ranges, dryers, HVAC equipment, EV chargers, and kitchen appliance circuits, because sharing that capacity with lighting or general receptacles invites nuisance tripping and overheated conductors under sustained load.
Does homeowners insurance care what kind of wiring a house has?
It often does. Knob-and-tube and aluminum branch circuits regularly trigger higher premiums, coverage conditions, or an outright refusal to write the policy, because both have documented failure histories at their connections. Carriers frequently ask before renewal on older properties.
What is the difference between grounding and bonding?
Grounding connects the system to earth so voltage has a reference point. Bonding ties metal parts together so they sit at the same potential and a fault finds a low resistance path back. Both matter, for different reasons.
How can I protect equipment from power surges?
Layered protection works best. A surge protective device at the service entrance blunts the large events coming down the line, and point-of-use protection guards sensitive electronics from what gets past it. One without the other leaves an obvious gap.
